Microsoft Edge is getting a free erected-in VPN, powered by Cloudflare
Microsoft is testing a new feature for the Edge browser called Secure Network. This is a built-in VPN service powered by Cloudflare, although unlike other VPNs you are limited to 1 GB of data per month.
Microsoft Edge has been a powerful browser since it became Chromium in 2019. Although it has recently surpassed Safari as the second most popular desktop browser, despite Microsoft's decision to move to the Windows 11 alternative, it may play a role.
A new feature (vpn) coming to edge browser
On a recently discovered support page, Microsoft described in detail a new feature coming to the browser that is expected to support Google Chrome. "Microsoft Edge Secure Network" is a built-in VPN based on Cloudflar.
Although Microsoft does not explicitly call this a VPN service, it does provide a description. The company claims that enabling this feature helps prevent online tracking by encrypting your web traffic while keeping your location private by masking your IP address.
How to Use Microsoft Edge Secure Network
To use this feature, you must first log in to your Microsoft account. This is necessary because you only get 1 GB of free data per month, which is tracked in your account. Microsoft has not indicated whether there will be payment options for additional data in the future.
Cloudflare claims that it will not store or sell any user information and will delete all data related to browsing sessions within 25 hours. Secure Network is not yet available, but will likely be available soon on Edge Canary or Dev.
It is worth remembering that having a built-in VPN in your browser is not new, because Opera has had it since 2016.
